point reyes hike
FROM SACRAMENTO, IF YOU TAKE I-80 towards San Francisco, then hop on 37 to Vallejo, you can pass through the small town of Novato and make your way to Point Reyes Station. This is where we went last Friday -- a change from our original plan to hike up to Lake Berryessa (previous post).
I have to admit that my knowledge of Point Reyes was limited to the fact that it had a beach and it was where my brother would go to buy fresh oysters.
I found it a scenic destination to observe wildlife, view the shore along Drakes Bay, and do whale watching. But while we didn't catch sight of whales, we did walk some of the many trails to choose from.
This post will be mostly pictures from the hike.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with...
Passing by Blair Witch territory. (I dare not enter.)
After walking about 2.5 miles, we reached Santa Maria Beach.
How much did you say you weighed again, Pete?
After half a mile along the shore we climb back up on the trail.
Okay... so we were also careful to stay away from the cliff's edge.
Then we caught sight of this peculiar rock formation atop a hill.
...the things James W would do for $2.
...and the things we'd do on a dare.
This is meant to give a sense of scale. Note how tiny James W appears (all the way in front) when he hasn't reached halfway up yet.
Victory. Some of us scaled this steep hill pretty quickly. There was loose rock and with the camera in hand, I had to climb at a slower pace.
And at the top, a moment to rest before looping back. At this point we were at about 300 ft above sea level, and looking over a creek running almost parallel to the Woodward Valley Trail, making its way to the ocean. The skies were overcast for the most part, but we were fortunate to catch some moments of sunshine.
